Our Story

Inspired by a love of the sea and island life, The Sonas Collection story began with the nine bedroom Toravaig House in 2005. The vision of Ken Gunn and Anne Gracie Gunn soon saw the “ship ashore” combined with a luxury sailing experience on board the 36 foot “Solus”.  For eleven years experienced Sea Captain Ken and Coastal Skipper Anne combined their twin passions – hospitality and sailing. They took guests and hosted weddings on trips through the Sound of Sleat to the Small Isles and St Kilda.

The unique business model was an outstanding success and as demand grew the next addition to the Sonas Collection was the 2007 purchase and renovation of the Duisdale House, just three miles from Toravaig.

Eight years later the collection was complete with the addition of the iconic Skeabost House north of Portree. At that time, Anne’s daughter Jen and her family joined the business. The three hotels have their own individual character, but the hallmark of the Sonas Collection is the contemporary Highland styling combined with unmistakable Highland Hospitality. The winning formula has seen Anne and Ken win many industry awards, including the prestigious VisitScotland Thistle Award for Scottish Hotel of the Year in 2015.

Our Ethos

 

Gaelic is the native language of Skye and Sonas is the Gaelic for Happiness. It is integral to our ethos to ensure that each guest will find their own happiness on their stay with us here on Skye.

Although each hotel brings its own unique personality to the collection, the overall ethos is the same –a passion for providing great service and sharing Skye’s unique culture, history, natural environment and locally sourced food, so loved by a family born and brought up on Island.
